Exploring West Virginia in May 2017, we feature the fascinating gear-driven Shay and Heisler steam locomotives to be found on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad and working the steep climbs of the Cass Scenic Railroad. At Elkins, the Mountain Explorer Dinner Train is observed being prepared, to be powered later by a pair of EMD FP7A diesel locomotives.

While in the area, a brief encounter with the Appalachian & Ohio Railroad is included, filmed previously in 2009. Having featured the western end of the CSX Kanawha Subdivision in Volume 7 of the American Railway series in 2009, from Ashland, KY, to Kenova, WV, we returned in 2017 continuing the journey from Huntington to the eastern boundary at Montgomery, and dipping into Deepwater in the New River Sub.

Other scenes include Barboursville, Hurricane, Scott Depot, St Albans, Marmet, East Bank and Crown Hill. Most locations feature 2- or even 3-camera action sequences, offering varied and additional views of the huge selection of motive power on the passing trains.
