A look at 135 examples of the French BB26000 locomotives at work across the country from 1993 to 2007. Freight and passenger trains are witnessed as well as now-withdrawn locos.

The angular-style of the French BB26000 electrics have been a common sight on the country’s electrified network since 1988 when the first of 235 locomotives were delivered to Dijon Depot. The class has largely survived intact with just two withdrawals as a result of accident damage in 24 years, until that is, December 2014 and January 2015, when five examples were withdrawn as a result of overcapacity and the need to undertake extensive and expensive repairs, which in the end could not be justified.

So it is that 2015 will probably go down as the beginning of the end for this hugely distinctive and versatile class of locomotive. Lineside Video Productions has put together material contained in its European Railway DVD Series as well as previously unpublished material into one double-disc programme, which features 135 different locomotives in action from the north to the south and east of the country.

Filmed between 1993 and 2007 this DVD documents the variety of passenger and freight services these capable machines have hauled around the system in years gone by. We include two locomotives that were the subject of the 2014/2015 cull.

For anyone with an interest in French Railways this is an ideal companion to any Railway DVD collection.
