This programme uses new and previously published material (first seen in European Railway: Issues 28 and 29, plus 'Special Edition 2008') and visits:

However, each section contains, new, never before published footage. Rapperswil and the snow section at Göschenen is completely new material.

Andermatt - we pay a visit to the town on a sunny 27th February 2007. This is a busy junction on the metre-gauge Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, where the station sees constant activity. The beautiful snow-covered landscape really makes the red livery of the railway’s rolling stock stand out as they make their way up and down the nearby mountain rack sections. Locomotives from classes HGe 4/4ˡ to Deh 4/4ˡ and Deh 4/4ˡ are featured. Pushpull passenger services are witnessed as well as the famous ‘Glacier Express’ from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Diesel shunter Tm 2/2 no: 4972 is also seen working around the station area.

Arth Goldau – situated on the busy Gotthard mainline where the routes from Lucern and Rapperswil as well as to and from Zug all converge. Filmed in the Summer of 2006 and again in the Winter of 2007 a wide variety of motive power and traintypes are to be seen. These include Südostbahn class 456 and 576, SBB Re 4/4, Ae 6/6, Re 6/6, 460 and 482, as well as electric units from classes 523 and 560. DB traction is also witnessed with class 185s on freight - and an Italian ‘Cisalpino’ tilting trainset from class 470.

Rapperswil - our Lineside Interlude takes us to the western edge of the station and to the causeway across Lake Zurichsee. Südostbahn class 456 and 576 are seen as well as SBB class 450-powered trainsets on S-bahn services. Filmed in June 2006.

Schynige-Platte-Bahn - a lovely trip down this scenic mountain railway as we look at operations through Wilderswil station and the summit at Schynige Platte, with superb vistas across to the mountain range that include the Jungfrau. Plus the line’s 100-year old locos!

Göschenen - further action from the Gotthard mainline as we witness trains through the snow on the 27th February 2007. SBB Re 4/4, Re 6/6, 460 and DB 185, plus Italian class 470 ‘Cisalpino’ trainsets are all seen in action at this popular train-watching location, close to the mouth of the famous St.Gotthard tunnel.
