Description

Run-time: 1 hour and 30mins approx.

The St.Anton Pass route was first conceived as a rail line linking Great Britain with Egypt; in the end it served as one of the few standard-gauge lines built over the Alps with construction completed in 1884. Today it is an important mainline linking eastern Austria with the west of the country and onwards into Switzerland. This programme looks at the line from near Innsbruck over the summit at St.Anton am Arlberg to a point just short of Bregenz. We have brought together video footage spanning just over 23 years where we look at the variety of traction and rolling stock that have been, and still are, a common sight on the route. Today’s railway has remained remarkably unchanged with modernisation of the main mountain route only partially completed, allowing the observer to witness buildings and infrastructure that have stood the test of time for many decades.

We see a variety of motive power including classes 1042, 1044/1144, 1016, 1116, 1110, 1063 and 4024. Filming takes place close to and on now abandoned stations, the lineside as well as locations up on the valley sides. We see modern Railjet trainsets, overnight sleeper services, regional, intercity, local and a variety of mixed wagon freight and lengthy container services - and all amidst superb Alpine scenery.
