Most of the video contained in this programme was first published In the DVD Magazine series: ‘European Railway’, Issues 37 to 39 and filmed between 2009 and 2010.

A look at the mainline linking Munich with Salzburg. Bordering the northern part of the Alps we see Austrian and German electrics in action. Class 101, 111, 151, 152, 185, 1116, 1216 and 294 all feature on various traffic types. Filmed in July 2010.

We study the mainline that runs along the River Elbe south-east of Dresden. Using July 2010 material we see traction from the railways of Austria, The Czech Republic and of course Germany. Overnight sleeper services, diesel railcars, container trains, S-Bahn passenger, mixed freight and international passenger trains are all seen amidst the splendid scenery.

Next we sample local trains to the west of Berlin with class 112 and 114 locos in action, before we head south to the area just to the north of Zwickau, where class 143, 155, 612 are seen going about their business:

An extended feature from Hamburg-Harburg where the sheer amount of freight and passenger activity are well and truly evident. Incredibly our visit was made on a Sunday and what would in the UK be a ‘quiet day’, but here we can see anything up to 15 freight trains per hour passing through the station. We see class 101, 110, 113, 145, 146, 151, 152, 155, 185, 189, 1116, 202, 221 and 250 to name just a few - an amazing place for the railway enthusiast to visit!!

We travel to the Rostock and Berlin mainline to the east of Hamburg, where we witness DB-Regio class 120 electrics at work as well as class 101 on intercity, class 143 on stopping services, and 145, 155, and a pair of elderly class 151s on freight duties. We also catch a class 101 at high-speed - we’ve not filmed one quite so fast before!

Class 103 action south of Nuremburg.
