Description

(Run-time: 1 hour and 46mins approx.)

In this programme we return to the Highland Mainline north of Dalwhinnie, first looked at in Issue 12 of this series. The spectacular scenery is witnessed as we feature passenger and freight services, including HSTs now in their final few years of operation. Tesco intermodal and ColasRail-operated cement are the two main freight flows seen as well as sleeper, Azuma-class 800, HSTs, 158 and 170 units are witnessed on passenger workings.

The North Yorkshire Moors heritage railway is seen in action with both steam and diesel operations filmed. We feature the southern end of the line between Pickering and Levisham and then the northern section near Goathland and Grosmont. Steam in the shape of Black 5s, a 9F and an NER P3 as well as diesels from the line’s Class 08, Class 25 and Class 37 stable make up the types seen.

The now yearly prolonged closure of the Severn Tunnel for maintenance work leads to diversions of both passenger and freight services via Gloucester and the Golden Valley route via Stroud and Swindon. During the July 2024 blockade we took our cameras to the region as we study operations near to Standish Junction and around the tunnel at Sapperton. Empty stone workings, scrap, steel, oil and freightliner traffic is seen as well as diverted IETs on Paddington to Swansea services.

The Settle to Carlisle line is visited as we look at the line through Aisgill and through Horton-in-Ribblesdale. This section follows on from the previous section which featured in Issue 12. Class 47, 60, 66 and Class 70 are featured on passenger and freight and Class 158 and a black 5 are seen on passenger workings, on this spectacular stretch of railway line. We have some excellent scenes where Class 70 locomotives are working flat-out as they tackle the grades on trains weighing in excess of 2000 tonnes!

In our final section we travel to Kent to view action on the 15-inch narrow gauge railway that is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch. This fascinating mainline-esque line sees superbly miniature steam and diesel action on lengthy passenger trains, between Dungeness and Hythe.
