Description
Run-time 60 mins approx.
Austria - A visit is made to the St.Anton pass line in the spectacular Arlberg Mountains which forms the major rail route between Austria and Switzerland. Class 1110 electrics now in their final years, as well as 1044, 1142, 1144, 1016 and 1116 are all featured.
Basel Part 1: One of the most important and varied rail centres in Europe. In this first of two parts we look at the rail scene on the German and French main lines to the north of the city. SNCF class 20200 electrics are just 13 strong and work exclusively on trains to and from Mulhouse and Basel. We also see BB63000, BB25500, BB26000 and Z560 types on a variety of workings at Basel St.Luis station. Our DB section features classes 101, 111, 140, 151 and 155 at Eimeldigen and Wiel yard.
Czech Republic: In the north of the country we look at the line between Lichkov and Letohrad where we feature classes 110, 741, 753 and the unmistakable sound of 'unsilenced' class 749s! A real rural railway with class 781 workings as an added bonus.
France - Miramas: One of the busiest freight and passenger centres in southern France just outside the city of Marseille. A whole host of train types are seen from motorail trains formed with German passenger stock to block freights carrying bauxite. TGV, BB7200, 8100, CC6500, BB22200 electrics and BB66000, 67000, and 67400 diesels are all featured - as well as a seven loco convoy!
Germany: Demise of the class 219s. This ex-DR diesel-hydraulic are expected for withdrawal from service quite soon; we sample some of the remaining locos at work on local passenger trains at Gera - a location perfect for a fitting farewell to this legacy of the former communist era.
Switzerland Hotspot: Various electric multiple units, main line locomotives, diesel shunters, and new high-speed trainsets all feature as we sample the action from the railway town of Solothurn. Classes 460, Re 4/4s, Ae6/6s, 500, Bm6/6 and Bm 3/3 are just some of the types to be seen.
