(Standard DVD) European Railway: Switzerland Special Edition 2004
Description
The video programme for all those interested in european railways. In this edition we look at the railways of Switzerland. Run-time approx 90 mins
ZWEISIMMEN: The town is the terminus of the standard gauge BLS-operated line from Spiez and is the boundary with the metre-gauge Montreux Oberland Bernois (MOB) lines to Lenk, Gstaad and Montreux. We see a variety of narrow-gauge locomotives and railcars as well as BLS electric units and the endangered Ae4/4 locomotives now in their 60th year in traffic; all amongst superb mountain scenery.
BIELER SEE: Our SBB action takes us to the little known main line that skirts the northwestern shore of the Bieler See. Bounded by vineyards and steep hillsides we study the variety of traffic to be seen on this through route from Zurich to Lausanne. New class 500 intercity expresses as well as classes 460, 465, Re4/4 and Ae 6/6 are amongst those seen in action.
The BLS through KANDERGRUND and GOPPENSTEIN: A study of freight and passenger activity over this, the famous Lötschberg route. Double-headed class Re4/4s, 460s and 485s are included as well as a vintage BLS Ae8/8 double-loco. The Kandersteg car shuttles are featured before we end with some night scenes at Goppenstein station.
ANDERMATT: Situated on the extensive Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn network, a selection of metre-gauge electric locos and multiple units are seen at work amongst the stunning partly snow-covered mountains.
Lineside Interlude - RHÄTISCHE BAHN: A brief look at this popular railway at the mountain town of Guarda.
ZERMATT to BRIG: We continue our tour of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn with a journey along the scenic line to Zermatt. We feature BVZ and FO locomotives and railcars including the rare sight of a freight train on the line. The Matterhorn mountain is seen in almost perfect weather conditions as we take a look at activity around the resort of Zermatt. We finish with action from the narrow and standard-gauge lines at Brig, including a quadruple-headed freight train providing over 32,000hp!
