Description

Run-time 63 mins approx.

This programme documents the ÖBB Class 1042.0, 1042.5 and 1142 electric locomotives at work in the country between 1998 and 2006. These were the first of the more modern electrics to work on the Austrian system and were to be found at work on fast passenger as well as heavy freight trains. The programme is split into two main sections: the first looks at the 1042.0 sub-class of 60 locomotives, all of which were withdrawn from front-line service by 2013. The second part features the 200-strong 1042.5 sub-class which were later renumbered to class 1142 after modernisation work. We see a variety of workings from around the country, including Intercity expresses, local passenger trains, push-pull commuter services as well as freight services, particularly around Wien and the Semmering Pass route. Two main colour schemes are seen - the ‘Valousek’ red and grey and the older blood-orange livery with with cream stripe. A number of locomotives were rebuilt with the plating over of small cab-side windows and the blocking up of one of the driver doors on each side of the locomotive. Much of the material used has appeared in the European Railway series, but in this production we bring it all together to create a programme worthy of any European Railway collection.
