Run-time: 1 hour and 46 mins approx.

Our American Railroad series returns to Chicago where we take a look at the trains and traction to be found on the Union Pacific (UP) Geneva Sub. Our journey begins at Ellwood near to Proviso Yard and finishes out to the west at the busy railroad crossing at Rochelle, IL.

This is the main UP mainline into and out of the City and shares its tracks with Metra Commuter trains. We call in at most of the suburban stations along the route out to near Elburn, where we witness Union Pacific road freights as well as Metra commuter trains on this busy passenger route. The line sees a good number of container trains each day bringing foreign power to the line - we see Norfolk Southern and Canadian Nation power on some of the consists. Manifests, unit coal, grain and autoracks make up the other traffic to be seen.Metra trains have a variety of loco types including double-headed power on some of the workings.

One of the highlights of the programme comes from West Chicago where the Canadian National, Elgin, Joliet and Eastern tracks cross the UP/Metra line on a flat diamond. Here we see long freights pounding the tracks in between the UP and Metra passenger train action.

Continuing our journey we are in wide open countryside as a coal train and manifest make their way up the grade out of Creston. Finally, the Railfan Park at Rochelle concludes our programme where the UP line crosses over the BNSF, with various freights seen in the snowy conditions.
