Description

(Run-time 1 hour and 45 minutes approx.)

The line from Zürich to Olten and beyond to Bern and Biel/Bienne is one of the busiest main lines in the country. The four-track route into Olten sees constant passenger and freight train activity. We took our cameras to the route in 2022 and 2023.

The route covered is from Rupperswil in the east, through Aarau and the busy station platforms at Olten and continuing west on the Biel/Bienne line as far as Oensingen. Classes 185, 186, 193, 232, 420, 421, 423, 430, 450, 460, 465, 474, 476, 484, 485, 500, 502, 503, 511, 514, 515, 526, 560, 620, 842, 923, TGV and ICE all appear on various workings. The first part the four-track section to the east of Olten. Here freight and fast passenger trains are seen at speed and in quick succession.

Next we have the first of two evening visits to Olten under the impressive arched station roof.

The third section looks at the line west of Olten to Oensingen before we return to Olten. A mixture of freight including postal, refrigerated vans, mixed, container, intermodal, lorry, fuel and engineers trains are all seen as well as the current passenger train types in operation.
