Somerset - a surprising amount of traction variety is witnessed as we take a look at traffic through Wellington, situated on Whiteball bank close to the Devon border. Loco-hauled trains dominate with classes 31, 33, 37, 47, 50 all appearing together with an early look at the then new class 155 ‘Sprinter’ DMU, plus the more usual HSTs - but then still fitted with their screaming Paxman engines. Non-stop action as we feature Speedlink freight, engineers, ballast, passenger, sleeper, parcels, fuel and clay traffic in 1988.

Oxford - in 1992 the main line between here and Didcot was dominated by the Class 47 which worked most of the passenger services on the line. It is these that we see in our day out at the City, filmed in March 1992. Network South-east and Cross Country passenger services are seen as well as class 58s on the frequent coal trains to and from Didcot Power Station (traffic now consigned to history). We also see DMUs on local workings as well as class 60s in their early days on Oil trains, a class 37 on scrap and a class 56 on the Redland self-discharge aggregate train. Class 47s also appear on freight.

Buxton & Chinley - a journey back to the late 1980s and early 90s as we study passenger and stone traffic around this popular train-watching location. We see class 123 and 124 ‘Trans-Pennine DMUs, class 31 loco-hauled workings, pairs of class 20s on stone. We witness a class 40 on parcels, 47s on stone workings, pairs of 37s as well as class 45s and 31s on freight - just some of those seen in this blast from the BR past.

Whitley Bridge - if you wanted to see your class 56 locomotives at work in the Yorkshire coalfield, then this was one of the best places to visit. Situated between Eggborough and Drax Power Stations and Knottingley the line handled an endless procession of MGR coal trains. We pay a visit to the area in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1991 when the ‘Grids’ dominated the motive power scene. We also travel to Hensall and to the east of Knottingley Colliery to see the trains in action. Also seen is a nostalgic view of shunter 08 056 on a set of cripple wagons with an ex-LNER brake van on the rear.
